Fall into Fun! Squish, Roll, and Mold Play Dough

Children love to squish, roll and mold play dough! What a great way to get kids to strengthen their hand muscles and their fine motor skills. We want our little ones to have control over these fine movements to avoid future frustration. Strong little hands are perfect for holding a writing utensil when writing or drawing, using silverware with both hands in a coordinated way, and mastering the use of scissors to cut where intended. Children also let their imagination and creativity go wild when given the opportunity. So, let's get wild and build strong little hands by playing....with play dough!

I know, first hand, that buying play dough for a toddler can get expensive! They love it but they also love to not put lids on the containers and the dough dries up. This is why I have given home made play dough a chance. I have found a post on a blog that did all of the research for us and found us the best play dough recipe!

Ingredients
1 C Flour
1 C Water
1/4 C Salt
1 T Vegetable Oil
2 t Cream of Tarter
Food Coloring (4 drops)
Sauce Pan and Wooden Spoon

Directions (Cook all ingredients over stove)
1- Pour all ingredients (order does not matter) into sauce pan.
2- Stir until everything is mixed well.
3- Once the mixture is mostly clump free heat over medium heat.
4- Stir and keep stirring, after a few minutes it will start to clump up.
5- Stir until one big clump is formed and remove from heat.
6- Knead by hand.

Ingredients

Cooking Playdough

Big Clump

Kneaded
Tip: I added a few drops of Lavender Essential Oil to the dough to get a calming effect on my little one. You might want to avoid this oil if you're using it at school due to allergic reactions.

This Fall, you can have children count and make apples out of play dough! If you laminate these play dough mats, students can count the apples in then ten frame, trace the number with a dry-erase marker, and then add that number of apples to the tree.

Hope your kiddos have fun making apples!
